Dan Speas Fish Rearing Station is 10 mi. w. on SR 220, then 4.5 mi. on CR 308 following signs. The station is one of Wyoming's most productive fish hatcheries. Its use of a nearby spring, which promotes rapid fish growth, enables it to produce a 4-inch fish in 120 days. About 1 million fish are stocked annually.

Fort Caspar Museum and Historic Site is .5 mi. n. of SR 220 off Wyoming Blvd. at 4001 Fort Caspar Rd. This site on the Oregon, California, Mormon, and Pony Express trails includes reconstructions of an 1847 Mormon Trail ferry, an 1859 Guinard bridge and an 1865 frontier Army fort. Museum exhibits recount the social and natural history of central Wyoming, from prehistory to the present.

Historic Trails Interpretive Center is off I-25 exit 189, then 1 mi. n. to 1501 Poplar St. Seven galleries represent Western trail history through interactive and multimedia exhibits and dioramas. Visitors can sit in a covered wagon and view a simulated crossing of the North Platte River. A five-screen theater features an audiovisual presentation illustrating pioneer and Native American life. During the summer months, encampment reenactments take place and interpreters in period costume perform demonstrations.

Historic Trails West

Historic Trails West departs from Fort Caspar. The tour features a wagon train that travels along the actual ruts of the California, Mormon and Oregon trails. Visitors also can take an excursion where they ride horses as American Indian warriors did on the old trails. Historical accounts are given. Three- and 5-day expeditions also are available.

Tate Geological Museum is on the Casper College campus at 125 College Dr.; take Wolcott St./Casper Mountain Rd. s. Displays include fossils, jade, meteorites and minerals, as well as traveling exhibits. Highlights include bird, dinosaur, fish, mammal and reptile bones and fossils that are more than 50 million years old. Also present is a fossil preparation lab.
